With nearly 15 years of combined leadership and clinical expertise, Nilsa Ruiz emerges as a beacon of empowerment, championing opportunities for Black and Brown communities to thrive by fortifying both systemic and personal resilience.
As a distinguished Latina mental health expert, she navigates her practice through a racial equity lens, recognizing the transformative potential of intergenerational approaches.
In 2019, Nilsa Ruiz emerged as a pivotal figure in Chicago, community organizing; playing a crucial role in bridging the voting divide for Latinos while bolstering representation for Black and Brown local officials. Through her efforts, she became a catalyst for increased civic engagement and political empowerment within the communities she served.
Nilsa Ruiz’s illustrious professional career encompasses over 9 years as the Director of Mental Health at a non-profit organization, where she led a clinical team with distinction.
During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she spearheaded efforts to provide essential school-based mental health services, ensuring support and resources reached vulnerable populations during a time of unprecedented need .Recently selected for the prestigious Spring 2024 cohort of the Women In Power leadership program, by the Agora Foundation.
This esteemed 9-week initiative offers a platform for both white and racialized women to engage in transformative discussions, intentional discourse, and the sharing of lived experiences, further amplifying Nilsa’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowerment.
Certified as a Racial Healer trainer, Nilsa embodies the ethos of understanding her clients’ narratives while harnessing the collective strength of community and individual resilience.
Her academic contributions extend to her role as an adjunct professor in 2022, at Loyola University’s School of Social Work, where she imparted valuable insights on the subject Power, Privilege, and Social Justice, enriching future practitioners’ understanding of racial and systemic issues.
Her professional experience includes being Certified in Circle of Security, employing an attachment-based parenting education program to help parents better understand and strengthen their relationships with their children. Through these groups, she addresses generational trauma and current barriers faced by families, employing a holistic lens in all her endeavors.
Additionally, as a certified Crisis Response Trainer through the Crisis Prevention Institute, Nilsa equips herself with the tools and strategies necessary to effectively address crises and support individuals in distress.
